What are ethical search engine techniques?
Ethical search engine techniques and methods, or what is also called “white hat”, are means of getting your web site listed in the search engines, for specific keywords, by only using methods that the search engines approve.
Why should you only use ethical web site promotion?
If the search engines discover that you are using black hat techniques they can ban you, with no prior notice, from their search engine. This has already happened to a number of sites and once you are banned it is almost impossible to get back into the search engines.
Below is a list of some techniques that are totally ethical (white hat) and can help your site appear in the organic, or natural, search engine results:
- Writing unique content which includes the keyword or phrases in a natural way.
- Writing constant fresh content to your web site as this will draw the search engine robots back to your site to see what new content you have added.
- Using the title tag and meta data to include the keywords specific to the page.
- Using internal links within your site with the term you are optimizing for, linking to the page you are optimizing.
- Submit your web site to legitimate sites and directories.
Below is a list of some “black hat” technques that you should definitely avoid.
- Duplicate content. You must make sure you content is unique. The search engines do not like duplicate content.
- Using a font that is the same color as the background. This is a method that used to be very popular in order to try and trick the search engines. The search engines “see” text that your real user will not.
- Redirecting search engine robots to a different page to that of which your real user will see.
- Keyword stuffing. You must write your content in a natural way as possible and not try and stuff your content full of the keyword or phrase you are trying to optimize.
- Adding links to link farms. This means adding links from your web site to another web site in return to a link to your web site.
You may receive emails offering you a link on a web site in return for a link on your web site linking back to this website.
Check the web site and web page where your link will be displayed. Make sure that it is not just a page full of irrelevant links. If in doubt say no!
